Iggy and Lou Lou

A new decorative fashion hit the markets in 2003 and has hit my eyes this past month (August 2010). I’m one that loves a decoration that has a story behind it. After I took a few interior design classes my big design concept is to always have one piece of history, one sentimental and something that brings your character out. I now introduce you to Iggy and Lou Lou a concept that brings together a child’s world of imagination and Australian culture. These porcelain skulls are amazing and remind me of a childhood of my own.

With everything becoming smaller in size these days a future design will be a minature skull hanging around our necks or it could go in the other direction and they could be blown up into a larger scale.. replacing the lion figures that people have outside there driveways.

Convergence of Technology and Fashion

Technology is slowly entering the domain of fashion, through the consumer desire for aesthetically pleasing, yet functional goods. Kenpo, a leading clothes manufacturer, has embraced this concept to create a garment that is both fashionable and functional. The Kenpo iPod jacket combines fashion and technology to create a product for consumers that allows them to “balance their environment” of fashion and music.
The designers at Kenpo have created a jacket that enables wearers to control their iPod from their sleeve. The idea stemmed from the issue of people having to constantly take their iPod out of their pocket in order to change such things as the artist, song, settings, etc. The jacket by Kenpo integrates controls on the sleeve that enable the user to skip, play, pause and alter the volume of their iPod. The jacket incorporates “smart fabric” touch-pad technology to enable users to use the controls, similarly to those found on an iPod.

Joel Bernstein, vice president of Kenpo, Inc believes the Kenpo jacket is “the pinnacle of form, function and personal style”. He regards technology and fashion to be the two factors that have the greatest influence on the consumer and considers the jacket to embrace these to create a functional, wearable item. This is the first item of its kind and, judging by other technological trends throughout history, it is likely that the item will be further developed and more items of its kind will be introduced. The invention of such a product highlights the endless possibilities of technology. Whether this product will sell millions, I don’t know, but it certainly outlines that there is a market for the convergence of technology and fashion.

Katie Price ("Jordan") launches own iPod range

The fact that this post is going in the fashion category is a bit of a stretch but it is to do with the design of a brand new series of iPod nanos and shuffles. The Huffington Post reported "Playmate, author and perfumer Katie Price, formerly known just as the British topless model Jordan, launched her own range of iPod accessories in London on Friday, and she dressed the part," (Thomson, 2010) and she sure did! Price basically dressed as a "human iPod", albeit in a way that best allowed her to show off her ... bodily assets. Decked out in an embellished silver bodysuit, silver thigh-high boots and a crown made out of her range of iPod nanos (and with an iPod shuffle not so discreetly clipped to the front of her cleavege and another set of shuffles worn as earrings), Price was hard not to notice. The photos probably aren't assignment appropriate, but you can take a look at her extravagant costume here. Oh, and did I mention the designs on the new range of iPod products are based on Price's tatoos?

The question here is will her new range of iPods and iPod accessories even be popular? Who would want to buy an iPod designed by a former playmate who quotes "perfumer" as a profession? This isn't the first time a celebrity has collaborated with Apple in order to design a new iPod. Bono, frontman of U2, famously encouraged Apple to get involved with the (PRODUCT)RED cause for HIV and AIDS prevention by selling bright red iPods and giving some of the proceeds to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Obviously, this is a very good cause and should be celebrated but where should we draw the line at celebrities endorsing these new technological products? Will there come a time when everytime we go to buy a new phone, new iPod, new computer or new TV, we see some celebrities name branded across it? Perhaps Katie should've stuck to perfuming...

RE: Katie Price (Jordan) launches her own iPod range

Like any popular medium, new media has become the perfect launching pad for a range of celebrities to make more money out of practically doing nothing. As we enter the technological age, unoriginal creations like Katie's will become so popular it will replace the trend of developing perfume.

I think Katie's endorsement will do more for Apple than it will her own image!

You should check out this article, it discusses how companies like Hungama Digital Media Entertainment and UTV New Media are signing up exclusive deals with celebrities to develop websites, and interactive platforms for mobile space. This paid service allows users to subscribe to a particular app or package for a range of celebrities and is expected to boom in the next few years. I know I definitely wont be wasting my money on this but there is obviously a market out there for it.

In response to both of these entries comes information about the iPod Nano's new function as a wrist watch. Despite not being as pretty as Katie's it is still something to admire as Apple finally touches the small field of watch technology instead of the usual computers, phones, and portable media players. The only problem with this development is the limited battery life which would be eaten so quickly due to the assumed large amount of time caused by the screen being on constantly (Axon, 2010). Although Apple may not have intended to have the new Nano used this way its undeniably a beautifully constructed fashion accessory. :)
