Personally, Twitter is like a briefer and more interesting/entertaining form of a blog. Also so much easier on the go for updates/tweets from news sites, etc.

It has become addictive...just like facebook did. At first, I thought twitter was very self-absorbed...tweeting about yourself day in and day out? Obviously I've learnt how useful it can be and use it regularly.

Firstly how Amanda said that you can find out information directly from Twitter before it even hits the news. I have found this to be the case many times with Ninemsn in regards to the disastrous relationship of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. For example Heidi posted on her Twitter that she had dreamt she was sleeping with out her nose reinforcement tape (as some of you may be aware he plastic surgery is taking its toll on her nose). The next day Ninemsn had done a whole story on how Heidi was having bad luck with her surgery.

Secondly with what Josiah said about corporate issues, I have a friend who was annoyed at delays from a flight company and posted in on Twitter. Within a few hours the flight company had written on my friends page apologising and asking for them to clear the air.

I think Twitter has become a great source of information as well as a great marketing tool.
It really has because I find myself less on facebook and more on twitter now.
I think Twitter and other social media forms are giving people a better insight into certain celebrities lives. What kind of an example are they setting? This is only promoting the “bulling” aspect of middle school and high school and personally I think it is going to cause problems further down the line.
Hey

I agree with what you are saying, there are no real privacy settings that are enforced by the creators of particular websites. Anyone is able to fake their age to get onto any website they want.

In regards to bullying online, I think this happens far to often. Many celebrities talk about each other online in a discriminatory manner which is not setting any examples for younger users. A legislation is currently underway in Australia to help stop cyber bulling.

For example, coming off a rough day of work there is nothing sweeter than venting online to your Facebook friends. However, users who are not savy with privacy settings or are silly enough to add their boss as a 'friend' online expose themselves to tortious liability.

For years now, if a journalist unfairly accuses or ridicules a person in a newspaper article they can be made liable for such statements. The same exists for TV, Radio and other forms of print media. So be careful - the same rules still apply on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

I think that many people still think that Facebook or Twitter are 'separate' from their real lives (i.e. compartmentalisation). This concept was recently analysed by Rosen (2010, p. 10)where she stated, “…privacy becomes more difficult and true compartmentalization nearly impossible; on the Internet, private misbehaviour becomes public exhibitionism.”

So be warned - defamation DOES exist online and you can be prosecuted! Here are a couple of examples:

An obvious example is where companies are selling and managing accounts and other similar things for mediums such as Second Life. There is also the example of a lady who was making a killing selling actual virtual properties (as in houses) in Second Life.

I recognise that you are specifically talking about companies that are not necessarily associated with virtual worlds, but choose to conduct business within them? Again, there are huge benefits as they are accessing audiences and consumers that they ordinarily may not be able to engage with.

The benefit to gain, however, is in tension with the legal interaction with such virtual mediums, as the owners of Second Life and World of Warcraft are yet to negotiate a comfortable arrangement with users who do attempt to set up companies around these websites.

Furthermore, where companies are conducting business within the virtual worlds, questions exists as to whether the normal laws of contracts and corporate law still apply.
